Top Attractions in Lijiang

1. Lijiang Ancient Town
This ancient town is unique for its lack of walls. Its narrow, smooth, and clean stone paths, houses built entirely by hand with earth and wood structures, and ubiquitous small bridges over flowing water make it a town rich in culture. Under the bright sunshine, one can always find elderly Naxi people strolling leisurely.

2. Shuhe Ancient Town

Shuhe is an integral part of Lijiang Ancient Town, complementing and extending its natural scenery, folk customs, historical relics, and multicultural landscapes. As early as the Ming Dynasty, Shuhe was an important town in Lijiang. Nestled against the mountains and waters, the residential houses are well-arranged. There is a pond on the street called “Jiuding Longtan,” also known as “Spring.”

3. Lugu Lake

Lugu Lake, historically known as Lukou Haizi, is surrounded by towering mountains with a snow period lasting more than three months a year. Revered by the local Mosuo people as the “Mother Lake” and acclaimed as a “Fairyland on Earth,” Lugu Lake is home to the Mosuo people, who maintain a matrilineal clan marriage system characterized by voluntary unions and free separation, a rarity in the world.

4. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Located northwest of Lijiang, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain has 13 peaks, all perennially snow-capped due to glaciers, resembling a robust jade dragon reclining on the mountaintop, poised to leap into the Jinsha River, hence the name.

5. Lijiang Tiger Leaping Gorge

Known in Naxi as “Fulu Acang Guo,” and fully named Yinshi Acang Xia, it is situated at the junction of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, marking the boundary between the northwestern Hengduan Mountains and the eastern plateau region. Tiger Leaping Gorge is the world’s deepest gorge, divided into three sections: Upper, Middle, and Lower Tiger Leaping, with a winding road of 25 kilometers. Each section has a narrow river surface, and on the north bank, there is only a single-file mountain path, with waterfalls plunging and huge boulders scattered.

6. Lashihai Wetland Park

Lashihai, with its lush aquatic plants and beautiful lake scenery, is hailed as the cradle of life and is a base of the Nature Conservancy. Transformed from a seasonal body of water to a plateau lake with a constant water level, the mirror-like surface reflects the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Wintering waterfowl rest peacefully or soar between the blue sky and white clouds, creating a unique atmosphere of the plateau wetland. Lashihai is a classic place for horse riding and boating.

Off-the-beaten-path recommendations:

1. A Single Tree

2. Yulong Village, Jade Pillar Supporting the Heavens

At the foot of the southern slope of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, there is a village called “Wuluoken,” meaning the village at the foot of the snow mountain, which is Yulong Village. In Naxi folk songs, Yuhu Lake and the snow mountain deer farm are often mentioned. In Yuhu Lake, the snow water is clear, the water plants sway. The blue sky and white clouds set off the tall Yulong snow-capped mountain reflected in the lake. It seems that all of nature is precipitated at the bottom of the lake. This ‘Yuhu inverted reflection’ is one of the famous ‘twelve scenic spots of Yulong’.

In Baisha Ancient Town and Wenhai, Naxi indigenous people still live here. There are often Naxi grandmothers selling wild vegetables at the gate of Sifang Street. There are very few shops. In the direction from Baisha Town to Fuguosi Temple, Wenhai is a wetland on the plateau.

Qingxi Reservoir is just an ordinary reservoir, but the view of the snow mountain from here is very beautiful. This photo was taken with a mobile phone when the editor was taking a walk one morning. It can be so beautiful without any filters.

Baoshan Stone City is located in the Jinsha River Canyon 110 kilometers north of Lijiang City. It is named because more than 100 households live on an independent mushroom-shaped boulder. Inside the city, there are tiled houses everywhere and crisscrossed lanes. It is simple, natural and extremely wonderful. Baoshan Stone City in Lijiang is surrounded by cliffs on three sides. One side of the stone slope directly inserts into the Jinsha River. There are only two stone gates in the north and south for access. It is a real city of natural danger.
